Being out of work can be a scary thing. There is a general loss of security in your life, money worries, and you might even be wondering where your next meal will come from. Being unemployed can be depressing. What you eat can affect your both mood and your health, which is important while unemployed. As a matter of fact, a healthy diet is one of the most important facets in getting yourself back on track while you are unemployed, healthier eating can certainly affect your potential for visits to the doctor. No matter how much money you made/make, you can still eat healthy while unemployed.

Drink Plenty of Water

When you’re doing the best to save money, now is the time to switch to water from sugary juice and soda. Either water from the tap or bottled, water is the much better deal and is a lot better for you. Water is essential to your physical and mental well being, so drink plenty of water. An additional benefit of drinking plenty of water is that staying hydrated also gives you a full feeling and can curb appetite.

Use Foods that Have Multiple Purposes

Foods that you need to stock up on while unemployed include:

All of those foods can be used in sandwiches, salads, and other meals. They are all relatively cheap, and most important,  when browsing the grocery aisles, you can look for other foods that can be used for any meal in the course of your day!

Make sure that you are getting enough vitamins and minerals. Depression can set in easily if you are unemployed for an extended period of time. Truthfully, some nutrients are especially beneficial. Researchers have found that certain nutrients are particularly effective in fighting depression. Certain foods that are high in the following nutrients can help stave off any type of unemployment depression that may sit in:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids
  • Folate
  • Vitamin B12

You can boost your diet with foods rich in these nutrients or take supplements. Omega-3 fatty acids are mostly found in fatty fish, such as salmon, albacore tuna, lake trout, and mackerel.

Try to Eat as Regular as Possible

You need a stable state of mind while you are interviewing and on the job hunt! As difficult as it may be, try to have three meals each day at around the same time of day. Or, if it is easier, make it a point to eat five smaller meals throughout the day. Having regular meals will keep your blood sugar stable and help prevent mood swings and keep your mental aptitude on track. No potential boss wants to see you irritated or depressed just because you are hungry.

Avoid Alcohol

It’s easy to drink alcohol to help forget about your problems and to help you try to feel better. Like it or not, alcohol is a depressant and will only make depression worse in the long run. And could potentially result in a legal issue, one that could even require the services of an OWI lawyer.

Make Wise Food Decisions

The best diet to stave off any unemployment induced depression is actually the same type of diet that’s good for the rest of your body. This type of diet includes plenty of whole foods, such as:

Foods like these are more likely to keep your mood stable than processed foods and foods with added sugar, which can affect your blood sugar levels affecting your overall mood and sense of well-being, things that all need to be in place to help you eat healthy while unemployed.
